The two angels have revealed to Lot that they are about to destroy Sodom. They have blinded all the men of the city who wanted to rape them, so Lot knows they are the Lord’s angels and the real deal. The angels have have specifically told Lot and his family to leave immediately.
Gen 19:16 “And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.”
He lingered? Get out of here! That’s what the angels kept telling Lot and his family, yet the LORD being merciful (I love that), physically had to drag them away from Sodom.
Isn’t it good to know that we have a God who will drag us out of our own crap that we can’t seem to break away from? It could look like a myriad of things. Sometimes that might look like an angel taking you by the hand and dragging you. Sometimes that might look brokenness from being at the rock-bottom.
Sometimes we don’t understand His mercy and why He’s got us where He does, or why He’s taken us into this place our out of that place.
I don’t have to understand it, I only have to trust His love for me.
Wow, thanks for sharing. It has blessed me 🙂

A random reader who drifted to this blog.
Thanks for stopping by Matt.
Let me ask a question. If the Angels have them by the hand, how is the Lord being merciful? Are the angels a type of Christ or is the Lord used as the God head in that whole trinity thing?
I don’t know if I understand what your asking. I see the Lord’s mercy for Lot and his family in that the Angels drug them out of that place where they were surely going to be destroyed if left to their own volition. Lot and his fam did not want to leave Sodom – even with the impending destruction – because “… they lingered…”
They knew they should leave, but were so drawn and held there – not unlike being in bondage to sin – that they just couldn’t break out, so God broke them out – perhaps even against their will.
Lot’s wife still yearned for the city and was turned into a pillar of salt.
That’s how I see the Lord’s mercy in that story.
What I am wondering is why that statement is within that sentence? As if the Angels who took lot out were the Lord himself being merciful. I have read that anything the bible talks about angels and do not mention specific names it is a type of Christ. I am not saying I believe that but I am wondering if this might be true here. Does that make sence? Was it God in this story they are talking about or Jesus as the Lord?
🙂 Now you’re going down KE’s path of a the last few posts. God and Jesus as Lord are the same… so yes! Are the angels in the story fore telling of Christ’s redemption? Again, I say yes.
OK, so check this out. This particular Hebrew word (translated here as “the LORD being merciful to him” is only in one other verse in the OT.
Is 63:9 In all their affliction He was afflicted,
And the Angel of His Presence saved them;
In His love and in His pity He redeemed them;
And He bore them and carried them
All the days of old.
Here the same word is translated as “in His pity.” This verse is clearly prophetic about the coming Messiah. So again, to your question, I think so – the angels in this story are a type of Christ. Your thoughts?
So you are saying that mybe this was Jesus taking them by the hand and leading them out of danger and sin? That is an interesting thought to me. I know that God and Jesus and Holy Spirit are all the same and yet different in character and maybe even nature. So is this Jesus before He submitted to human form? Not just random Angels? Why would they be called Angels if it is Jesus or even a type of christ? Jesus wasnt an Angel. Interesting topic maybe it should be its own blog huh?
I’m not sure I’m saying that the angels were pre carnate Jesus. I do think they were “following orders” and that their actions were a picture of God’s mercy – which would later be ultimately expressed in Jesus Christ.
